Practical advice

How should you respond to a water leak?

The first priority is to avoid danger, especially when water is approaching electrical equipment.

Identify the affected area

Observe where the water appears to come from, which rooms are affected and whether the flow changes. Do not open a wall, appliance or pipe to search for the source.

  • A visible or suspected source
  • A continuous or intermittent flow
  • Water near sockets, cables or appliances

Act only when it remains safe

Turn off the water supply only if the valve is known, easy to reach and away from electrical danger. Otherwise keep your distance and ask for help.

Document the situation

Note when it started, what equipment was in use and where dampness is visible. Photographs taken without entering a dangerous area can help the review.
